What is True Kindness?

According to the dictionary Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous and showing consideration and patience to others..

The true meaning of kindness is how we choose to show it by our actions. Kindness can be displayed by being empathetic to someone that is less fortunate than oneself. It's being thoughtful, patient, being aware of the limitations of others and showing empathy and kindness in the process.

Some people are naturally kind and sympathetic to others. Showing patience to those with limitations. Such as opening the door for the disabled or elderly. Simple gestures mean a lot and can brighten someone's day that is suffering.

Kindness is more than being nice. Kindness might look like being helpful or showing empathy. It may mean doing nice things without expecting nice things in return

.

Kindness goes beyond merely being nice. We can be nice or polite and inwardly be resentful at the same time. There can be a lack of sincerity in just being nice; there is often a perception of doing the minimum. Whereas, being kind is doing intentional, voluntary acts of kindness. Not only when it’s easy to be kind, but even when it’s difficult.

For instance, if someone is harsh, impolite or rude, can you still be nice? Many cannot. It takes genuine care and concern for the other person, whether we know them or not to display true kindness. Or maybe we display kindness simply because it's the right thing to do.

Kindness can create a chain reaction. All it needs is one person to start it. However, we can show patience and kindness to someone that is rude, impatient or lacks empathy for others and it doesn't get passed on. We should not let that deter us from continuing to show kindness to others. Those that are rude or impatient will eventually reap what they sow. That is not our concern. Our concern is to do what is right and show kindness to others regardless of how kind they are in return.

Kindness is being selfless, caring, compassionate. Is it easy? Not always. It may come natural for some people, where others may never develop a true understanding of kindness.

When we have compassion for our fellow man we show it through acts of kindness such as a smile, a kind word or an unexpected deed. Being patient and kind to those that are less fortunate.

Displaying true kindness makes others feel good and in the process we pass along hope and promote peace. In the process of showing kindness we feel good about ourselves because being kind is simply the right thing to do.

May we never underestimate the power of kindness.
